Live Animal Measurement Technologies

CDPQ's technical services team has developed wide-ranging expertise in the evaluation of ultrasound measurements and also serves as a reference for the rest of Canada. Whether for commercial producers or stakeholders from different backgrounds, this service is increasingly in demand. In addition, the expertise developed in swine production, is now in demand in many other commercial animal operations in Quebec (sheep, cattle, wild boar).

Some of our achievements in this area
  • Organization of national, provincial and regional sessions concerning the application of the national accreditation and maintenance program related to A-mode and B-Mode ultrasound standards
  • Ultrasound measurements carried out in the project to assess the thickness of the rind at the neck, at different stages of growth, in order to reduce broken needles in the meat

We can provide these services:
  • Measures taken in the context of Genetic Evaluation Program (PEG): backfat measurements, measurements of muscle depth, estimation of intramuscular fat and weight measurements (growth)
  • Backfat measurements for estimating body reserves in sows and gilts
  • Estimation of percentage of intramuscular fat
  • Training on the use of ultrasound technology

Measurement Taking in Other Animal Species

The expertise of the technical services team, developed in swine production, is now used in many other animal operations in Quebec (sheep, cattle, wild boars, etc.).

Some of our achievements in this area
  • Monitoring of producer farms enrolled in the program of analysis for Quebec's beef cattle herds (PATBQ), supervised version
  • Taking on-farm measurements of the loin eye area and backfat thickness in sheep and other animal species for the genetic evaluation program (GenOvis) administered by the Centre d’expertise en production ovine du Québec (CEPOQ)

We can provide these services:
  • Taking backfat and loin eye area measurements and estimating the percentage of intramuscular fat at beef bull test stations and on-farm
  • Taking ultrasound measurements (sheep, wild boar, red deer)
