Les Éleveurs de porcs du Québec
(the Quebec pork producers association) gave the Centre de développement du porc du Québec inc. (CDPQ) (Quebec Centre for Swine Development) the mandate to develop an application based on feed balance figures, to estimate nutrient excretion of phosphorus and nitrogen. The application has producers enter the different parameters needed to calculate the nutrient excretions of phosphorus and nitrogen of their herd. These parameters are, among others, the number of pigs entered and their weight, the number of deaths, the feeding stages, and the amount and nutritional content of the feed consumed.
Different scenarios can then be created to verify the effect of particular feeding strategies on nutrient excretions. Producers can use this application to measure the impact of herd management on the environment.
So why not also assess your herd’s excretions in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency?
This application lets you go further. By entering your energy consumption figures (electricity, diesel, natural gas, etc.), the feeding parameters for the herd, plus the figures related to manure storage and spreading, you can estimate the greenhouse gas emissions of your manure excretions and test the impact of different herd management scenarios on these types of excretion.
You will also be able to learn just how energy efficient your business is, according to your own energy consumption figures.
