PARITY-SEGREGATED PHASE FEEDING FOR GROUP-HOUSED SOWS
Based on research conducted by Dr. Ron Ball, now-retired researcher from University of Alberta, parity-segregated phase feeding would minimize the overfeeding of gestating sows while still adequately meeting their amino acid and energy requirements.
Any related savings in feed costs would depend on price relationships but, in general, savings are greater for older sows when there are wide price gaps between corn and soybean meal.
Inspired by this research, a project was conducted in a commercial setting to compare a conventional feeding strategy to a parity-segregated phase feeding strategy. Based on 2017 average Quebec feed prices, the use of a parity-segregated phase feeding program resulted in a reduction in feed costs at around $5/sow per year.
